For decades, Volvo has been a leading force in the automotive industry when it comes to research and safety technologies. While every car manufacturer aims to provide the highest quality safety technology and designs, Volvo offers a number of unique safety features that set it apart from the rest. Continue reading to learn more about the safety features available in your new Volvo car.
Volvo Safety Technology
The E.V.A. Initiative
For 40 years, nearly all automotive safety research was compiled using male crash test dummies leaving women more susceptible to injury in the event of a collision. Volvo cars are tested with male, female, and pregnant crash test dummies to ensure the safety features are effective for every passenger.
Due to differences in anatomy, women are at greater risk to whiplash than men. That’s why Volvo cars offer the Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) which includes uniquely designed seats and head restraints to remove the discrepancy in whiplash between men and women. Women are also at greater risk for chest injury. Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) combined with side-impact airbags reduces the chance of severe chest injuries by up to 50%.
City Safety
Every new Volvo car comes equipped with City Safety — a suite of safety features to help protect both passengers and pedestrians. With the use of camera and radar technologies, City Safety identifies and responds to potential hazards such as pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and even large animals. If City Safety detects a possible collision, it will alert you so you can respond accordingly. If you are unable to respond in time, the brakes will be automatically applied to help avoid or mitigate collision. Some Volvo models also include Steering Support to steer you away from potential danger.
Pilot Assist
Part of the IntelliSafe Assist safety suite, Pilot Assist was designed to provide safer driving practices at higher speeds making it ideal for highway conditions. This collaborative feature helps you maintain a consistent position in your lane with distance keeping to stay a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you. Pilot Assist even connects with navigation to adapt to a comfortable cruising speed when approaching a curve.
